Telling Your Client's Story Through Art

Whether it's a corporate office or residence, deciding what artwork to choose for a client can be challenging. Commissioning original artwork for a project is not only a unique but appealing option as the end result is a one of a kind look. The artwork is created to meet the designer and client's specific requirements; both have input in the art project so that the final piece truly reflects the client.

Different elements of corporate culture can be reflected through art. To get started, ask your client for some adjectives that describe their company and corporate culture. If they have difficulty coming up with adjectives, look toward their mission and vision statements for ideas. Through these words, an art concept can be established. For example, it can speak of community, future, inspiration or achievement - whatever words you and your client use to describe their company and space. You can also use products your client already owns, which is very rewarding in "telling their story" and doesn't take a huge budget.

For instance, one plastics company had an artist create original artwork from samples of plastic. The plastic was scanned and enlarged with the help of the artist to create abstract works of art. Then the story of the plastic product and artwork used was presented next to the artwork. In another example, an electronic games company framed their CD's and 3-D objects and displayed them on its walls to "tell its story."

Property developers can do the same with project photos. And placing them on canvas or aluminum creates a unique look. Original artwork can also be created using old photos, whether coloured or black and white. With the photographer's permission, photos can be scanned, corrected using a computer program such as Photoshop and then displayed on a canvas with plaques describing the photos. Note that it's ideal to use high resolution images (300 dpi).

Another possibility is to commission an artist to paint an original of a particular image but in a different size, or recreate a similar work of art already in existence, albeit with your client's direction. Because not all artists are willing to take on commissions, it is helpful to have an art consultant or representative co-ordinate with the artist to create the perfect artwork for your client. They will know which artists are willing to create commissions, how much flexibility the artist has and, in addition, have a pre-existing relationship with the artist to make such requests.

An original work of art can assist with the branding of a company. The artwork can be hung in a client's office and with the artist's permission and art consultant's assistance, the client can create art cards of the images for special events. You can also suggest your client create a limited edition series of the artwork as corporate gifts, calendars and for their annual report.

The ideas are endless as to how an original piece of artwork can assist your clients. Thus, with so many great stories you and your clients can share, what a wonderful opportunity to assist them in "telling their story" through commissioned art.
