Marion Webber

Professional Canadian Painter, Vancouver, B.C.

I am a painter with a photographic eye. Photography “captures” the moment and removes elements to create an image. Painting is an additive process of building elements to communicate a message. This conceptual blend is the foundation of my art. I paint mostly landscapes; intimate spaces to grand vistas. I am interested in the fleeting quality of light and the abstract mix of shapes, lines and tones in landscapes. What attracts my attention is the glare off a leaf or the cascading shape of a shadow. I focus on simple shapes or objects. I want to take notice of the ordinary and make it extraordinary. Being in nature and the nurturance it provides is what I want to transmit in my art. Conceptually though, my work represents how I feel about life and my relationships. I hope others feel nurtured and peaceful viewing my art. Its a good antidote to the chaos from our city based lives.

The earliest influence to be an artist was my mother, an accomplished oil painter. During the 1970s, I acquired a BFA from UVIC, with a focus on photography, drawing and painting. The early tonal influence of black and white photography is still evident in my work today, especially my contemporary works.

My painting mentors are quite broad, from 15th century European Renaissance to 21st century impressionist, abstract and conceptual artists. Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Monet and Renoir have influenced my use of tone and painterly technique. I also appreciate the work of BC’s Gordon Smith and the New York artist, Wolf Kahn.

In 1979, I received a diploma in graphic design. The following 20-year period as a graphic designer further strengthened the conceptual and design aspects of my art. I revisited mixed media art in the late 1990s. Since 2005, I have focused more on painting, particularly oils.
